What You'll Learn

You know the feeling: a bright student who struggles to read. A kid with brilliant ideas who can't get them onto paper. A learner who seems to understand math concepts but can't show their work. If you're an educator serving K–12 students, you've seen it. And you want to help—but where do you start? This three-credit graduate course answers that question. Over the next semester, you'll dive deep into the science of learning differences like dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and oral/written language disabilities. But this isn't just about understanding the 'why'—it's about the 'what now?' Using the Science → Experience → Practice → Impact framework, you'll learn to ask the question that matters most: "If we know more about how this student learns, what should we do differently tomorrow?" You'll analyze real student work, evaluate evidence-informed instructional strategies, and walk away with concrete tools you can use Monday morning. Whether you're a classroom teacher, special educator, reading specialist, or school leader, this course will fundamentally change how you support learners with differences. Offered through Gordon College in partnership with Riverside Learning, this course is designed for educators who are ready to move beyond one-size-fits-all approaches and truly meet students where they are.

More About This Course

This course was developed by educators and researchers who understand the gap between knowing about learning differences and actually knowing what to do about them. It's built on decades of research and real classroom experience—because theory without practice doesn't change student outcomes. The course draws from the groundbreaking work of Virginia W. Berninger and Beverly J. Wolf, pioneers in understanding how the brain learns to read and write. But it goes further. You'll explore not just the neuroscience, but the lived experience of students with learning differences. You'll examine how these differences show up in your classroom, how they affect student identity and belonging, and how twice-exceptional learners (those who are both gifted and have learning differences) navigate school. Most importantly, you'll learn to translate knowledge into action. Through case studies, multimedia resources, reflection, and applied assignments, every concept connects to authentic educational practice. You're not just earning credits—you're building expertise that will transform how you teach.
